Examining your own house

1.Evaluate the landscape, driveways, path lighting and outdoor access.

2.Evalutate the width, threshold, steps, door swing, hardware and security for not only exterior doors but also maneuvering through the home. Floor material should be slip proof.

3.Evaluate Kitchen: generally items should be reachable between knees and nose. Heavy items should be lower and no stepladder should be used.

4. Evaluate Bathroom. 80% of all falls occur in bathroom. Space should be sufficient for walk-in shower or tub. Grab-bars should be installed the appropriate places.

5. Evaluate bedroom. Bed should have collapsible railing and against the wall to ensure safety. Nightlights showing path to WC.

6. Lighting: Contrast between wall and ceiling.

Sufficient lighting throughout house for the task. Circulation inside and out should be well -lit.

7. Fire safety plan: Hear firealarm from every room with adequate smoke detectors. Have a fire-extinguisher readily available.
